Splan was shortened from the Danish (?) when they immigrated to Canada - Family Stories. Or perhaps on immigration to the USA? - SJL


The Splans were originally from "up on the river (by the St Lawrence) in the USA. They were members of the "United Empire Loyalists" so when the American Revolution broke out, the family either moved to Canada or were imprisoned. William Splan's father was born in a POW camp. After the war the family was released, and he/they headed to Canada." - ref CWTWL
