Joy (Horwood) Beach writes in 'Some information about the Horwood family':

"Harriet Parrott was born in the Winslow area of Buckinghamshire, & her mother died when she was very young, so she & her older sister Sarah, were brought up by their father. He was in the straw hat trade, & the two girls used to help him make hats from the straw they fetched from market. In those days there were many of these "cottage industries", & it must have been a help for the widower to be in the home to keep an eye on the girls."
