Splan, WILLIAM 1a 2a 3a 3b 4

Birth Name Splan, WILLIAM
Gender male
Age at Death 95 years, 7 months, 9 days

Narrative

Splan was shortened from the Danish (?) when they immigrated to Canada - Family Stories. Or perhaps on immigration to the USA? - 2013 SJL

It took until September 2015 to discover one Samuel Splan, b 1832 (our Thomas's elder brother), in the 1901 Alberta Census, listing his origin as Danish! The family back home in Ontario would no doubt be surprised as they are Irish (from O'Splain/Splaine or O'Spillane) but also Episcopalians (Anglicans). Perhaps TAL 'borrowed' the origin for his wife's forebearers given his well known attitude to the Irish (and to be fair, the Irish Catholic 'troubles' in Canada were not that long ago - see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fenian_raids - so his attitudes may have been common, if offensive to modern ears.) All speculation at this stage, of course. - SJL

Narrative

The Splans were originally from "up on the river (by the St Lawrence) in the USA. They were members of the "United Empire Loyalists" so when the American Revolution broke out, the family either moved to Canada or were imprisoned. William Splan's father was born in a POW camp. After the war the family was released, and he/they headed to Canada." - ref CWTWL

Narrative

1906 Census of Canada:
The Wm Splans are listed as having one servant Thomas, Ernest (aged 22) and by the 1911 Census as having two servants: Weston, George (b Oct 1879) and W??hingle [sic], Pete (b Sep 1989)
