Event Note

An unusal name and not following family naming tradition. Research suggests possibility of named for Cosmo George Duke of Gordon Gordon (sic) b 27 April 1720 SPeymouth, Moray, Scotland. son of Alexander Duke of Gordon Gordon and Henrieta Mourdant (Cosmo George Duke Of Gordon Gordon, 'Scotland, Births and Baptisms, 1564-1950' — FamilySearch.org.htm).

A search for Cosmo any surname on Family Search turns up none before the Duke, and quite a number scattered around Scotland in the late 1700s and early 1800s. Research indicates a Jacobite connection:

- his father, Alexander 2nd Duke of Gordon fought with the Jacobites at Sherrifmuir, lost (1716), was imprisoned, and then pardoned.
- Cosmo is named for Cosimo III de'Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany - a Jacobite.
